Encoding H.264 with Nvidia's CUDA

Jun 23, 2009

To follow up with the last post I made, I have found a pretty impressive piece of software called the Badaboom Media Converter. You can download it at www.badaboomit.com

This time, we are using our nvidia video cards to help with our encoding and this time I have actually tried the software. If you have a Geforce 8800GT or better video card that supports CUDA, then this program will work for you. I was able to encode entire DVD's in under 20 minutes, and I'm only using a Geforce 9600GT. Imagine if you had a 260GTX or better. At least three times to 6 times faster, depending on the source and hard drive I was writing to.

The kicker, it used NO CPU at all. I was able to continue with all my work without a single stutter. The temp on my video card went up about 10° which is about 30°s less than when playing a game.

This is getting pretty interesting. I can't wait to see things in a couple of years when the software out really starts to take advantage of these new capabilities offered. Might have to put video cards in my servers.
